Workover rig equipments and operation

Repairing an oil well sometimes requires a workover. It is commonly called by several names such as completion rig, workover rig, or pulling unit.

In many cases, workover implies the removal and replacement of the production tubing string after the well has been killed and a workover rig has been placed on location. Through-tubing workover operations, using coiled tubing, snubbing or slickline equipment, are routinely conducted to complete treatments or well service activities that avoid a full workover where the tubing is removed. This operation saves considerable time and expense.

 Companies that supply this type of equipment are Key Energy Services, Pool Workover Services, and Basic Well Services.

 Of all the problems that can occur during production, three stand out the most: equipment failure, wellbore problems, and saltwater disposal.

 WELLBORE PROBLEMS

 Sanding, formation damage, paraffin accumulation, oil-water emulsions, and corrosion are common wellbore problems.

 GN workover rig solids control system is mainly used for sanding problem. The system can separate large particles sand from the drilling fluids so the drilling mud can be recycled for drilling and “kill”the well. The working principle is to clean the drilling mud by 4 phase cleaning, they are shale shaker, desander, desilter, decanter centrifuge. But usually for workover operation, sometimes you can use a shale shaker and centrifuge only, because the sand size is not so large, but it needs to separate finer particles than oil& gas drilling.

Mud tank union and fittings

When you built a mud tank, you may need a lot of mud tank accessories, such as mud tank union, fittings, valves, connectors, flanges, pipes, etc.

Mud tank unions have been used for years in petroleum solids control systems around oilfield drilling rigs all over the world.  Drilling mud fluid systems connecting the steel tanks to the pumps need leak proof and quickly detachable connections for large diameter pipe 4” to 16”.

There are basically two types of unions used.  The air type with the tube being aired up seals the pipe.  The other type is a large solid o-ring which locks down on the O.D. of the pipe as the hammer nut is tightened.

Air union is also called pneumatic union, since GN do not use such union in the mud tank design, we would like to introduce hammer union mainly.

Hammer union

Hammer unions are one of the most common “quick connection” methods used in the oilfield for joining together components in a temporary pipe work system. They also have expanding applications in fixed installations and also for industrial purposes.

A hammer union comprises a thread end, a nut end and a hammer nut which, when cinched up, compresses a composite seal assembly thereby preventing leakage. The seal assembly comprises a metal insert of a size to pass into the seal groove of conventional hammer unions and a small seal acting between the insert, the thread end and the nut end. The small seal is conveniently an O-ring and is of a size that is compressed when the seal assembly is inserted into the thread end of the hammer union, thereby preventing the seal assembly from falling out of the threaded end when it is inverted.

It tells the truth, Only hundreds of rigs are sold, but no mud recycling system were paid more attention, people should consider more factors of environment protection, and recycle the used mud and clean them, so they can be used again for the drilling rig.

GN200gpm mud recycling system has been approved by many HDD clients, with proper treating capacity and small land required, the complete sketch is suitable for a 40 feet container, economic in transportation and easy removed. Recently we are studying the mobile mud recycling system(portable mud tank) with a trailor, you do not need to remove any equipments but only need a.headstock to transport it from one site to another, it is very convenient. Just like Kem-tron. We are going to public the new designed mobile mud system in 11th CIPPE, and would like to learn from the client’s suggestion to improve it. We have a strong R&D team, they focus on how to improve the technique, and study new equipments, at present, we have already more than 10 models shale shaker available, linear motion , BEM shaker, single deck or double deck, 3 screen panels or 4 screen panels, various treating capacity, even long vibrating motor or short vibrating motor, you have most choice in GN.

A portable drilling mud system includes a mud tank mounted on an over-the-road semi-trailer having an engine driven circulating pump mounted onboard and adapted to withdraw mud from the tank for circulation to the well and for recirculation through a set of mud agitating nozzles disposed in the bottom of the tank. A mud degassing vessel, a solids separator unit and an additive blending unit are all mounted above the tank. The degassing vessel is supported by hydraulic cylinder actuators for movement between a retracted transport position and a vertically elevated working position.

Mobile mud systems are designed with a wheeled undercarriage that allows improved maneuverability for all drilling rig components. GN mobile systems reduce drilling rig-up, down time, and help customers reduce drilling costs.

GN designed a new patent linear motion shale shaker, GNZS70-3B. It is designed to replace the previous model GNZS70-3 shale shaker, which is found not so economic and practical before.

3 Quick lock( wedge technology operation), which enables screen panel replacement in less than one minute. In drilling site operation, time is more important than money, so easy operation of screen replacement is necessary. It enables for an easy ratchet-type installation of the wedges, which eliminates hammer damage to the screens, as well as the paint on the sidewall of the shaker basket. You do not need any tensioning bolts or system, which can provide a small parts inventory, thus enabling cost savings to be realized.

Swaco horizontal degasser v.s. GN Vacu-Flo degasser

Swaco horizontal degasser and vertical degasser are all different with GN vacuum degasser both in structure and working principle.

The return-flow, gas-cut mud is drawn into the tank through a vacuum created by the discharge jet and pump. The mud is then dispersed in a thin layer over a two-tier, baffle-plate system where the entrained gas, including H2S and corrosive oxygen, is recovered by the vacuum pump. The freed gas is then discharged at a safe distance from the drilling operation while the restored mud is returned to the active mud system.

Working principle of GN

The vacuum degasser uses the suction of the vacuum pump to establish an under balanced pressure area in the vacuum cylinder and causes the drilling fluid into the hollow shaft of the rotator through suction pipe under the atmosphere pressure, and then lets the fluid spray to the walls of the cylinder from the windows on the hollow shaft, now the gas bubble cut in the mud may break and run off in the function of vacuum pump suction to a safe area due to the fluid collision and bubble separator. However, the mud will enter the drainage cavity forced by its self-weight and pass the rotator and discharge off the cylinder. In addition, drilling mud can enter the pump cylinder only through the suction pipe, and can’t be sucked in through the discharge pipe because the vacuum pump and the master motor are started simultaneously and the rotator connected to the motor will revolve at a high speed.

B    Steel frame screen is constructed with two or three stainless steel layers bonded tightly to the steel frame. The frame is made of high-strength square steel tube or flat steel welded to multi- ribbed construction. These layers are coupled with the frame through metal backing plate or bonded straightly as well.

 Compare with LW450x1000N, LW600x1000N has larger treating capacity and larger bowl, which can process more drilling fluids in one time and less drilling cost relatively. They are both middle speed decanter centrifuge, which can separate drilling fluids solids particles 5~7 μm, for some clients, it is enough for drilling fluids cleaning, but for some other clients, they need a high speed centrifuge to separate more fine solids from the drilling fluids, we will recommend GLW355x1250N or GLW-V-355X1250N. The max treating capacity is 176gpm.

Design & operation of API Standard shale shaker

GN designed some new models shale shaker in 2011, all of them are BEM shaker with 3 screen panel, the shaker screen dimension is larger than Derrick FLC 500 & 2000 series shaker, even 3 panel screen area is larger than Derrick 4 panel screen area.

The new designed shale shaker is according to API standard of design procedure,GNPS70-3,GNPS85-3 all matched standard oilfield solids control mud tank.

API standard design procedure of shale shaker

1 Shale shakers skids shall be level.

2 Shakers shall be rigged with adequate space, walkways and handrails to permit easy and safe servicing.

3 if the shaker is equipped with a rear tank, the flow line shall enter the rear tank as near the bottom as possible.

4 A means of diverting fluid from the flow line is recommended to permit the disposal of cement, spotting fluids, contaminated fluids, etc, before these fluids reach the shale shaker. The procedure shall not be used to dump the rear tank into the sand trap before trips.

1 The screens shall be inspected every time circulation is interrupted.

2 Use the shaker screens with the smallest openings that do not cause excessive drilling fluid loss.

3 Under normal operating conditions and when using a single-deck shaker with multiple screens, all screens shall have the same API designation.

4 Torn or damaged screens shall be replaced or repaired promptly.

e.g.GNZS63-3 shale shaker use wedge technology, it is easy to change and install Brandt Cobra shaker screen.

GNZS83-3 shale shaker use tension bolts to install screens.

5 When using shaker screens that need tensioning, tension shall be checked 15 min to 30 min after installation and tourly thereafter.
