In an ideal situation, all drill solids are removed from a drilling fluid by solids control equipment on a drilling operation. The two primary sources of solids are chemical additives and formation drill cuttings. Drill cuttings are contaminants that degrade the performance of the drilling fluid. If the drill cuttings are not separated, they will be ground into smaller and smaller particles that become more difficult to remove from the drilling fluid.

Most formation solids can be removed by mechanical means at the surface. Small particles are more difficult to remove and have a greater effect on drilling fluid properties than large particles. The particle size of drilled solids incorporated into drilling fluid can range from 1 to 250 microns (1 micron equals 1/25, 400 of an inch of 1/1000 of a millimetre).

How a venturi hopper work?

The fluid velocity must increase through the constriction to satisfy the equation of continuity, while its pressure must decrease due to conservation of energy: the gain in kinetic energy is balanced by a drop in pressure or a pressure gradient force. An equation for the drop in pressure due to the Venturi effect may be derived from a combination of Bernoulli’s principle and the equation of continuity.

How to operate a Mud gun?

Mud guns are meant to provide supplemental or primary mixing in mud tanks depending on the number being used and the pit size. They are best used in tank corners to keep solids from settling and a mud agitator is placed in the tank center.

How to operate the mud gun?

A. Safty information

TURN OFF. LOCK OUT, and TAG OUT the electrical power supply to the pumps feeding the mud guns before servicing.

Inspect the unit regularly, and replace damaged or worn components only with parts supplied by the original equipment manufacturer.

Before entering a mud tank for any reason, the mud agitators should be locked out and tagged out.

B. General maintenance

1. Grease the swivel once a week. Add (2) shots of a multipurpose NLGI no 2 grease.

2. Visually inspect the mud gun assembly for any leaks, loose fittings once a week. Repair as required.

3. Inspect mud gun jet nozzle for excessive wear. The nozzle has a 5/8” bore when new. The nozzle should be changed when the bore is 7/8” or higher. This should be done once a month.

Once installation is complete, the unit can be started by turning the feed pump on. The direction of discharge may be modified to suit the operators requirements by rotating the swivel.

What is the difference in operation between positive displacement pump and centrifugal pump?

Positive Displacement Pumpswill not p roduce the same flow at a given speed (RPM) no matter the discharge pressure.

Positive Displacement Pump must not be operated against a closed valve on the discharge side of the pump because it has no shut-off head like Centrifugal Pumps. A Positive Displacement Pump operating against a closed discharge valve, will continue to produce flow until the pressure in the discharge line are increased until the line bursts or the pump is severely damaged – or both.

The positive displacement pump can be applied as

When positive displacement pumps serve as a screw pump for feeding drilling fluids decanter centrifuge, when you change the frequency of the main motor through the VFD control panel, the treating capacity of decanter centrifuge will change, so the flow rate need to be lessed.

Closed loop drilling fluids system (sometimes referred to as closed mud or pitless system)are system which do not need mud pits, which can greatly reduce or eliminate the discharge of toxic drilling wastes on site.

1 HDD  mud system need mud pits, the drilling mud flow to mud pit, and the slurry pump installed into the mud pit transfer the mud to HDD mud cleaning system, and the processed mud is pumped to the rig again.

2 At a typical oil & gas drilling site, drilling fluids are circulated through the wellbore, then the fluids and drill cuttings are deposited in a reserve pit dug near well. This pit is used to hold used drilling fluids and wastes. There are many potential problems from pits — leaky liners and overflows can lead to soil and water contamination, pits can produce odors and toxic air contaminants, and pits can be a hazard for birds and wildlife.
