Screw conveyor is widely used in drilling mud solids control & waste management as important transportation equipment. Proper use of screw conveyor can make the field job with small footprint and high working efficiency. Let’s draw some conclusions on screw conveyor application in drilling waste management.

1) Connection between mud solids control system & drilling waste management system

The screw conveyor can positioned paralleled with solids control system, equipment like shale shaker, desander, desilter (or mud cleaner, combination of desander & desilter). The paralleled screw conveyor can collect the drilling cuttings discharged from solids control equipment and transport to next slant screw conveyor. This screw conveyor is for feeding for Hi-G dryer or Vertical-G dryer.

2) Feeding for Hi-G dryer & Vertical-G dryer

GN drilling waste management system, the first separation phase is generally equipped with Hi-G dryer or Vertical-G dryer. They both can be used for water based mud, oil based mud & synthetic based mud. Generally, the Hi-G dryer is more proper for water based mud; vertical-G dryer is more proper for synthetic based mud with comprehensive consideration.

The screw conveyor can make the feeding more even/homogeneous, in this case, the working performance of Hi-G dryer or vertical-G dryer can be stable.

For earth surface engineering,  the contractor no need to consider about combustible gas or explosive gas, like HDD no-dig engineering, piling engineering, tunneling engineering, waterway dredging engineering. I ever saw in the water well drilling site in Mongolia that they do not use any solids control equipments but only dig several mud pits, by this way, it is very low efficiency and Environmental Pollution.

Solids control system is a way for mechanical removal the drill solids. Mainly it includes screen devices & Centrifugal Separation Devices. Screen devices is the most important equipment called shale shaker. In the future of solids control system, shale shaker will become the only solids control equipment which will be used instead of desander, desilter, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge by improvement of its design. At present, linear motion shale shaker is the most popular vibration mode shale shaker.

But the arrangement of vibration motor various by different shale shaker manufacturer. Sometimes it is vertical installed, sometimes it is horizontal installed, it doesnot mean that horizontal installed shale shaker must be balanced elliptical motion shale shaker, it might be linear motion shaker.

Mud guns are meant to provide supplemental or primary mixing in mud tanks depending on the number being used and the pit size. They are best used in tank corners to keep solids from settling and a mud agitator is placed in the tank center.

How to operate the mud gun?

A. Safty information

TURN OFF. LOCK OUT, and TAG OUT the electrical power supply to the pumps feeding the mud guns before servicing.

Inspect the unit regularly, and replace damaged or worn components only with parts supplied by the original equipment manufacturer.

Before entering a mud tank for any reason, the mud agitators should be locked out and tagged out.

B. General maintenance

1. Grease the swivel once a week. Add (2) shots of a multipurpose NLGI no 2 grease.

2. Visually inspect the mud gun assembly for any leaks, loose fittings once a week. Repair as required.

3. Inspect mud gun jet nozzle for excessive wear. The nozzle has a 5/8” bore when new. The nozzle should be changed when the bore is 7/8” or higher. This should be done once a month.

Once installation is complete, the unit can be started by turning the feed pump on. The direction of discharge may be modified to suit the operators requirements by rotating the swivel.
