See the photo on the right, it is a mud circulation system with mud gas separator, in oil drilling solids control system, the 1st phase cleaning equipments of mud circulation system is shale shaker, which is fed the mud from high pressure manifold, the mud gas separator is fed mud from the chock manifold. When much of harmful gas is found during drilling, they close the valve to stop feeding the shale shaker, and open the valve to feed to mud gas separator, and use hundreds of exhaust pipe to transfer the harmful gas from mud gas separator to a place far from well head, and use flare ignition device to burn it. Mud gas separator is not a part of solids control system, GN can manufacture both of them, so we put them together for your convenience.
Mud circulation system is also called mud cleaning system, mud recycling system, solids control system, Usually if a mud circulation system with mud gas separator, it is usually oil & gas drilling or geothermal, it can not be HDD or water well drilling. Mud gas separator is horizontally installed on the skid with the chock manifold on it together, it is easy for transportation.
The mud cleaning system produced by GN solids control is widely used for horizontal directional drilling , water welling drilling ,coal bed methane, geothermal hole and mining diamond core drilling , it is used to separate the drill cuttings from the mud, so that the clean mud can be re-circulated to continue the drilling process.
As the Geothermal drilling usually close or inside the downtown, this requires the mud system to be compact with less footprint and user friendly with less noisy. Also Geothermal well drilling sometimes require high capacity performance for deep wells. Like water well drilling, mud rotary drilling is also the desired method for installing geothermal loops. As the bit penetrates the soil, it creates smaller fragmented pieces that are called drill cuttings. The mud carries these cuttings to surface to create an open hole from the top down to the bottom. The drill cuttings are collected into a mud pan or settling pit on surface and then the mud is re-circulated to continue the drilling process.

GN solids control mud system can be used for both oil & gas drilling and water well drilling. Water wellis an excavation or structure created in the ground by drilling to access groundwater in underground aquifers. Most shallow well drilling machines are mounted on large trucks, trailers, or tracked vehicle carriages. Water wells typically range from 3 to 18 m deep, but in some areas can go deeper than 900 m.
Most of the water well drilling rig is trailer mounted or truck mounted, for convenient transportation from one place to another. Some contractors do not process the used mud from water well drilling, but recently there are more strict laws for environment protection, they have to search for small mud recycling system to complete the job. They prefer trailer mounted mud system, GN 200gpm trailer mounted mud recycling system is widely used for water well drilling. Total transportation dimension is 5500x2300x4000mm( including the trailer height), it meets the transportation limit in most of the countries in the world( you do not need to remove anything when transport in domestic). Mainly there are 3 types of drilling fluids, water-based mud, oil based mud & synthetic based mud.
Synthetic-based fluid is a mud where the base fluid is a synthetic oil. This is most often used on offshore rigs because it has the properties of an oil-based mud, but the toxicity of the fluid fumes are much less than an oil-based fluid. This is important when men work with the fluid in an enclosed space such as an offshore drilling rig.
There is a technical limit to what can be achieved with water-based fluids, especially in the short and medium terms. For this reason, I believe advances in the environmental performance of synthetic-based fluids can be expected to occur faster, in combination with improved treatment and new drilling techniques. But synthetic based mud’s cost is much higher than water-based mud.
The mud recycling system for the 3 types of mud is basically similar but has little difference.
Synthetic based mud is mostly used for offshore drilling, people sometimes do not process and recycle the used mud at jobsite, they have the used drilling fluids in mud pits and transport them to a drilling fluids plant or factory for recycling and treatment, then ship back to the rig. In some other situations, they have the solids control system at jobsite, but no drilling waste management equipments at jobsite.
Water based mud is with cheaper cost and also environment friendly, it is mainly used for land drilling, in most oilfield in China or some developing countries, water based mud is widely used, and it works well with solids control system produced in China.
Geotechnical drilling is drilling which is often related to the construction of a structure such as a building or an oil rig. It can be part of the construction process as well as part of the investigation process conducted on site before the structure is built.
It includes drilling to remove rock and soil samples, along with drilling to evaluate soil stability and other topics of interest. As part of the construction process, geotechnical drilling includes drilling to prepare for foundations, caissons, and various supports. Drilling of this kind is overseen by an engineer who confirms the placement of the drill and makes sure that the drilling is conducted properly.

Commonly used methods
Depending on ground conditions and required drilling depth, core drilling or RC drilling can be the methods of choice. SPT or Standard Penetration Tests are performed by recording the number of hammer blows needed to drive up a sample tube to certain depth in to the ground. This would indicate the relative density of the soil.
How to process the mud produced by Geotechnical drilling?
The mud produced by Geotechnical drilling is very less, it depends on the length and the core diameter. Usually its treating capacity is only 5m3/h or less, but it can not be discharge away directly to the environment because of strict environment protection regulation. Directional drilling (DD) is seen as a marriage of conventional road boring and the directional drilling of oil wells.
It is also known as directional boring, horizontal drilling, slant drilling, or deviated drilling, is a method of trenchless technology that involves drilling a non-vertical well or borehole. It can be broken down into three main groups: Oilfield Directional Drilling, Utility Installation Directional Drilling (or H.D.D. or Horizontal Directional Drilling) Directional boring, and in-seam directional drilling to extract coal bed methane.
Many directional boring machines also use a drilling fluid or slurry called mud. Other machines use foam or air, or both. The drilling fluid or mud is composed of bentonite clay and water with additives for enhancing performance. The higher-pressure jet of fluid is used in soft ground to cut through the soil. The cuttings then get suspended in the fluid. As more fluid is pumped down into the hole, the cuttings are brought back up to surface where they settle in a pit or are removed mechanically.
GN solids control equipments are used to handle the drilling mud with cuttings, to separate the big cutting out of the drilling fluids, so that the mud can be used for drilling again.
