Solidification and stabilization are separate treatment techniques with similar goals. Solidification of wastes involves the production of a solid mass having sufficiently high structural integrity to allow transport and/or disposal of the solid without requiring secondary containment, i.e. mixing of sludge with shredded paper, sawdust, etc.
This technique converts hydrologic sensitive liquid and semi-liquids waste in a physical form that can be stored safely and conveniently. Stabilization, however, involves the immobilization of constituents in wastes by chemical alteration to form insoluble compounds, or by entrapment within the solidified product. The Stabilization/Solidification systems provide an effective method for processing oil-base waste producing an environmentally safe, dry material that is acceptable for onsite burial, land farming or disposal at an approved waste facility. The most commonly used industrial systems are lime based, cement based, silicates based, clay based, pozolanic and thermoplastic.
Both Stabilization and solidification are classified as fixation processes applied to oil waste when the main purpose is to immobilize, isolate, or in some other way contain the contaminant from solids or semisolids waste.
In both cases the target is:
- 1. Improve the handling and physical characteristics of the waste
- 2. Reduce the surface area available for transferring or losing the contaminant and restricting the fluid mobilization through the total volume of hard matrix
- 3. Reduce the contaminant’s solubility into the waste volume

Drilling waste management and zero discharge is a getting much popular recent years. It is important to get zero discharge on drilling waste management. Many EPC company wanna source professional equipment and professional personnel on the potential projects with large profit. The the drilling waste market capacity can reach 17 billion before 2018, it is said.
GN Solids Control is leading manufacturer for drilling waste management equipment & solids control equipment; after some years experience accumulation, GN Solids Control can offer professional solution on drilling waste management and can answer the question most of the people faced with ” How to achieve zero discharge on drilling waste management “. This chapter will give a comprehensive knowledge of drilling waste (OBM & WBM) from three parts as below. And tell people how to achieve zero discharge on drilling waste management in Part 3.
- Source of drilling waste
- Necessary drilling waste management equipment
- Treating process of drilling waste and How to achieve Zero discharge of drilling waste
Part 1: Source of drilling waste
Source 1: Drilling waste from oil based mud drilling operations. The assessment is yet to be conducted
Souce 2: Refinery waste: Most of it is waste water, sludge, and the usual refineries waste ingredients. The refinery waste will be first recovered from large ponds and for those ponds to be remediated to original status where we will plant them with trees.
Source 3: Storage tank sludge: The tanks are yet to be calculated in terms of number and storage capacity. However, they are estimated to exceed the 50 tanks mark.
Source 4: Oil pits (there are many oil pits and waste management service company are trying to do land remediation to original state which means they will treat the crude to get it back to its crude status, soil back to soil and water to be recovered):
Oil pit case from Iraq drilling waste management market:
- There are over 120 oil pits to be treated.
- More than 60% are emptied from crude and what is left is sludge and soil to be treated.
- Average sizes are 100 miters in length, 70 miters in width and 5 miters in depth.
- We will be dealing with all of them, the ones that have sludge and soil left and the ones that are still filled with crude.
- The base of all pits is earthen. No concrete nothing else but earthen.
- Our task is to treat all pits and remediate the land to original status where we will plant them with trees.

The Drill cuttings Management solution is designed to help maximize compliance with the waste management hierarchy principles, as well as ensuring that local regulations and standards are complied with. Ultimately, disposal will be required in all cases, be it solids and / or liquids.
 drill cutting management solution
Drill cuttings management solution usually including but not limit to:
1 collection of drill cuttings
There are various ways to collect the drill cuttings from the solids control system( shale shaker, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge). Firstly you need a cuttings blowing pump to blow the drill cuttings and waste produced by centrifuge from a collection place in the site to a drill waste storage tank or directly to a transferred truck or boat, they called it ”bulk tank”. Then Screw conveyors are used to transport drill cuttings and centrifuge waste from one location on the rig to another, probably to a vertical cutting dryer in the drilling waste management system.
2 Storage of drill cuttings
A Drilling Waste Container is to storage drill cutting, centrifuge waste and pit cleaning wastes generated during drilling operations. The drilling waste containers are typically transported to a treatment and disposal site for further processing.
After the drilling waste is treated by vertical cutting dryer, the cuttings will be collected by a small waste container and be transported to other place, the fluids are pumped to high speed decanter centrifuge for further process.

The drilling fluids with the cuttings from the well are discharged to a rig shale shaker where the cuttings are separated from the drilling fluid. The separation step does not completely remove drilling fluid from the cuttings, some drilling fluid and additives remain on the drill cuttings.
 drilling cutting treatment equipments
Then such drilling cuttings with drilling fluids will be dropped into a GN drilling waste system, through physical way to separate the usable drilling fluids with unusable drilling cuttings. For example, hi-G shale shaker to separate larger drilling cuttings, then verti-cutting dryer to separate drilling cuttings with oil less than 5%.The usable drilling fluids are treated by decanter centrifuge, then clean drilling fluids and water will back to rig again.
The cuttings separated by verti-cutting dryer with less than 5% oil can not be drain off directly, it may pollute the environment. We must use chemical way to continue the treatment.
Drilling cuttings treatment method:
Thermal desorption, re-injection, incineration and solidification. These methods have been applied in the site, they may have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Thermal desorption:
use of the patented Porcupine Processor to remove all water and oil, leaving a residual total petroleum hydrocarbon on cuttings of less than 1%.
Re-injection :

Decanter centrifuge can be used as 2 functions: one is to used in drilling mud solids control system, to recycle drilling fluids and get barite. The other one is to used in drilling waste management system, to treat the drilling waste and recycle drilling fluids. GN decanter centrifuges are working in many sites in Brazil for such purpose.
Other related equipments with centrifuge:
 decanter centrifuge rental in Brazil
In drilling fluids solids control system, centrifuge is used after desander and desilter, when they need to separate fine solids.
In drilling waste management system, centrifuge is used after cutting dryer, when they need to recycle the clean drilling fluids and drain off the cuttings. Sometimes it is used after hi-G shaker, it depends on the drilling mud type.
GN can provide both equipments related to the centrifuge.
People rent centrifuge because of the high cost of US centrifuge, also because of the maintenance cost, sometimes clients only want to use the centrifuge for a short while, so centrifuge rental is economic for them. But most of the clients rent centrifuge because they have Continue reading »

GN solids control provide solution for oilfield drilling waste disposal.
Oil and gas wells cannot be drilled without creating waste. However, with good waste management practices, the amount of waste can be reduced. By far, the greatest volume of waste generated in the drilling process is drilled cuttings. The first step is to use good solids control equipment, such as the GN linear motion shale shaker, mud cleaner, and decanter centrifuges.
When operated properly, the solids control equipment removes drilled solids from the mud, maintaining the rheology and thereby decreasing the need for dilution. Good solids control equipmentoperated properly also yields drier solids. Both decreased dilution and drier solids reduces waste and increase profits for the operator.
 Vertical cutting dryer
The second step is to use good drilling waste treatment equipments, like GN hi-G shaker or vertical cutting dryer, big bowl big volume decanter centrifuge, drilling waste collection box, dewatering unit etc. NOV Brandt called vertical cutting dryer “Vortex dryer”, there is also horizontal dryer.
