As a part of rig package, mud system is a separate but an essential part, the handling of drilling fluids can save huge cost of drilling. In the early oil industry open earthen pits were used as settling area to separate solids and mud thereby acting as a solids control equipment.

Now, with the stringent environmental regulations and high mud costs, the economics of an effective mud system come into consideration. Different solids control companies introduce zero-discharge systems, closed-loop systems, “quick move” technology, screening technology, disposal options etc. No reserve-mud pit is used in a truly closed mud system. Mud is continually processed primarily by mechanical means, such as screening, hydrocyclone and centrifuging to remove solids initially. A second stage to remove colloidal solids is by wastewater cleanup techniques.

It can remove virtually all entrained gases, including hydrogen sulfide and corrosive oxygen, from drilling fluid and reduce the threat of dangerous and costly blowouts while restoring mud to its original density for reuse in the active mud system.

There are two kinds of degasser in oil gas drilling solids control equipments, one is vacuum degasser i.e. centrifugal degasser, the other is mud gas separation i.e. poor boy degasser.

The centrifuge degasser works using the principal of centrifugal force to separate gas from drilling mud. The device passes a gas-cut material throough a centrifugal force field to accomplish the degassing. The degasser contemplates the slurry flowing through the degasser by entering it through the top and flowing downward or entering from the bottom and flowing upward. In either case the slurry moves through the force field to accelerate gravity settling of the continuous phase of the flowable material and to accelerate buoyant force gas bubble rising time.centrifugal degasser

Oilfield drilling Poor boy degasser that removes air or gases (methane, H2S, CO2 and others) from drilling liquids. There are two generic types that work by both expanding the size of the gas bubbles entrained in the mud (by pulling a vacuum on the mud) and by increasing the surface area available to the mud so that bubbles escape (through the use of various cascading baffle plates). If the gas content in the mud is high, a mud gas separator or “poor boy degasser” is used, because it has a higher capacity than standard degassers and routes the evolved gases away from the rig to a flaring area complete with an ignition source.
