Solid control system, also referring as mud system, is used to separate the solids or gas from the drilling mud. There are several centrifugal mud separators such as hydro-cyclone separators (desander and desilter) and decanter centrifuge, and mud gas separator, which separate drilling mud and gas.
Hydrocyclone Separator
Hydrocyclone separator is always referring as desander and desitler, used after shale shaker in the solids control system. Usually the cone diameter is more than 6″is called Desander, and used as the second-control equipment in drilling operation. the cone diameter is less than 6″is called Desilter, and used as the third-control equipment in drilling operation. We commonly used 5 “and 4″ cone to separate solid-phase particle size 15-47μm in the drilling fluid.

Once a client asked a very interesting question. If we add Solids control equipment system ( Shale shaker,mud cleaner & vacuum degaser ) to the centrifugal decanter separator what will be the advantages ,or we can utilize only the decanter?
Briefly answer this question: Drilling mud with drilling cutting is very complicated. So we need a system to deal with different solids.
The equipments before decanter is used to separate the solids bigger than 7μm，maybe you can only use decanter, but I should say it is a precision instrument, and it is tender. A system is needed to keep each equipment work in his own role, and prolong each one’s life.

Shale shaker,desander,sand pump,and decanter centrifuge are main equipments for drilling mud solids control,the flowing is the report of using conditions for 13 oil wells.
In 13 oil wells, 5 wells use ZS2×1.15×2/3P low-frequency shale shaker, two wells teams using QGZS-G4 Ⅱ high frequency shale shaker, six wells teams using the DHL-1 high-frequency shale shaker. Accounted for using the number of high-frequency screen 61.5%, compared with last year have more greatly enhanced. One QGZS-G4 Ⅱ high-frequency shale shaker for the newly introduced, are used in good condition.

In oilfield drilling mud separation,The larger the centrifugal force, the finer the separated solids, so three types of speed decanter centrifuge can get according to separating factor.
 oilfield decanter centrifuge a) Low-speed oilfield decanter centrifuge: it is also called “barite recovery” centrifuge. Its separating factor is 500~700. To low-density solids, its separating point is 6~10μm. To high-density solids, its separating point is 4~7μm. This kind of centrifuge can be used for recovering barite.
b) Medium-speed oilfield decanter centrifuge: its separating factor is 800 or so, solids of 5~7μm can be separated, so harmful solids can be separated from the mud, so that gravity and viscosity of the mud can be controlled. Most drill team will choose this kind of centrifuge at present.
c)High-speed oilfield decanter centrifuge: its separating factor is 1200~2100 or so, separating point is 2~5μm, it can remove harmful solids, control mud viscosity, it is usually connected with low speed centrifuge to make up a dual centrifuge system(See figure 3).
