The mining sector in Chile is one of the pillars of Chilean economy and copper exports alone stands for more than one third of government income. Mining Minerals exploration by diamond core drilling will need decanter centrifuge. Usually the decanter centrifuge for mining is different with oil & gas drilling. The latter one will be with small handling rate and high G force, it needs to separate fine microns. The decanter centrifuge used for oil drilling fluids usually with larger treating capacity( 40~60m3/h, like MI-Swaco 414, 518 series or GNLW363 &GNLW364G decanter centrifuge).

1 Small handling rate:

Diamond core drilling mud system should be portable system with small foot print and easy to move from one site to another, so the centrifuge applied should be also small foot print. Last week we shipped another set of decanter centrifuge to South America. GN solids control is a new star for South America market, there are several sets of centrifuge working in site in Colombia. GN improved decanter centrifuge has the following features:

G-force 2035G, separation point 2~5μm, differential torque 4000N/m max, bowl speed( during working) 3200rpm, differential ratio 57:1.


The bowl has a cylindrical/conical shape and rotates at a pre-set speed optimal for the application. The slurry rotates with a different scroll design or by modifying an existing scroll. Scroll pitch and single or multiple flight configurations are important design variables.


The scroll rotates at a slightly different speed than the bowl and conveys the deposited solids toward the conical end of the bowl.

Materials of construction

GN solids control uses high-quality stainless steel for all wetted areas. Bowl and scroll castings are made from centrifugal cast high strength and corrosion resistant stainless steel.

How a decanter centrifuge works

A decanter centrifuge separates solids from one or two liquid phases in one single continuous process. This is done using centrifugal forces that can be well beyond 3000 times greater than gravity.

When subject to such forces, the denser solid particles are pressed outwards against the rotating bowl wall, while the less dense liquid phase forms a concentric inner layer. Different dam plates are used to vary the depth of the liquid – the so-called pond – as required.

The sediment formed by the solid particles is continuously removed by the screw conveyor, which rotates at a different speed than the bowl. As a result, the solids are gradually “ploughed” out of the pond and up the conical “beach”.

The centrifugal force compacts the solids and expels the surplus liquid. The dried solids then discharge from the bowl. The clarified liquid phase or phases overflow the dam plates situated at the opposite end of the bowl. Baffles within the centrifuge casing direct the separated phases into the correct flow path and prevent any risk of cross-contamination. The speed of the screw conveyor may be automatically adjusted by use of the variable frequency drive (VFD) in order to adjust to variation in the solids load.
