Five GN Decanter Centrifuges Successfully Commissioned for an Overseas Mine Tailings Slurry Separation Project

Recently, five GN GNLW764-VFD variable-frequency decanter centrifuges have been successfully commissioned and are now operating reliably at a major overseas mine tailings slurry separation project.

This achievement marks another milestone for GN in delivering advanced solid-liquid separation solutions for the global mining industry, overcoming the challenges of high-altitude operation, demanding process conditions, and severe abrasive wear.

The project was awarded by a major mining company following a highly competitive international tender. With stringent qualification requirements and demanding technical standards, the project presented significant challenges.

Located at an altitude of 4,500 meters above sea level, the mine operates under extreme environmental conditions that place exceptional demands on equipment reliability, structural integrity, and environmental adaptability.

In addition, the large slurry volumes, high mineral hardness, and severe abrasive wear created further challenges for continuous and efficient operation.

To meet these demanding requirements, GN developed a customized solution tailored to the site’s actual operating conditions, slurry characteristics, and environmental challenges.

The GNLW764-VFD decanter centrifuge features a large, 30-inch-diameter bowl and an advanced variable-frequency drive system, enabling precise operating adjustments for high-volume tailings processing while improving separation efficiency and performance.

Wear-resistant design enhancements and optimized material selection further strengthen the equipment’s ability to handle highly abrasive mineral slurry during continuous operation.

Through its advanced engineering, reliable product quality, and customized technical support, GN stood out among international competitors and successfully secured the project.

To verify equipment performance under actual site conditions, GN initially supplied one pilot unit for field testing. Following an extended period of operation at the mine, the centrifuge demonstrated stable performance, excellent separation results, energy-efficient operation, and a low incidence of equipment failures.

Impressed by the results, the customer subsequently placed an additional order for four identical units, bringing the total to five GNLW764-VFD decanter centrifuges.

The complete system also includes a 6,000-liter automatic chemical dosing unit and dedicated screw pumps, forming an integrated and automated tailings slurry treatment solution.

Together, these systems enable efficient solid-liquid separation, support resource recovery, and help the customer meet environmental treatment requirements.

From meeting demanding international tender standards to overcoming the challenges of high-altitude mining, and from successful field testing to full-scale system commissioning, this project demonstrates GN’s engineering expertise, customization capabilities, and commitment to quality.

GN design and manufacture both decanter centrifuge and three-phase centrifuge for industry separation. Solid bowl decanter centrifuges have been operating according to the same basic principle since the 19th Century.

GN design specific centrifuges according to specific separation tasks and the use of resilient, high-quality materials have improved the performance of the centrifuges.

Moreover, GN owns a branch for design PLC and electrical control system; this gives GN advantages in electrical components for measuring and control technology. The performance and availability of the decanter centrifuge or three-phase centrifuges are significantly improved by the control system..

Main Application of GN Industry Centrifuges

• Dewatering sludges / mud and suspensions
• Thickening sludges or mud
• Clarifying different type liquids
• Separating 3-phase mixtures, i.e. two immiscible fluid phases and a solid phase
• Classifying solids in a wet suspension by grain size
• Separation of solids according to various densities

The GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses centrifugal force to dry drilled solids in oil or synthetic base fluids. A stainless steel screen bowl traps “wet” solids and accelerates them up 900RPM with G force to 420G. Liquid is forced through the screen bowl openings, while “dry” solids are extracted by the angled flights attached to the cone, which rotate slightly slower than the bowl. Tungsten carbide protects the flights from abrasive solids and ensures long operational life. This aids in maintaining a constant gap between the scroll and screen bowl, which is crucial for proper operation.
