Centrifugal Pumps

Think of the centrifugal pump as the heart of the drilling fluid system. Its main job is to move large volumes of fluid continuously and reliably. In a typical drilling rig setup, its key applications are:

Feeding the Mud Pumps: The large, high-pressure triplex or duplex mud pumps are what push the fluid down the drill string. However, they are not good at pulling fluid. Centrifugal pumps (often called “charge pumps” in this role) are used to supply a steady, positive flow of fluid to the suction of the mud pumps, preventing cavitation and ensuring efficient operation.

Transferring Fluid Between Tanks: Moving drilling mud from one compartment of the mud tank to another, for example, from a settling tank to an active tank.

Powering Hydrocyclones: They provide the necessary pressure and flow to feed desanders and desilters (hydrocyclones), which remove fine drilled solids from the mud.

Supercharging: This is its most critical role. As mentioned above, it ensures the main mud pump has a constant, air-free supply of fluid at a positive pressure, which is essential for the mud pump’s performance and longevity.

Complete Solids Control Systems: They engineer and package the above equipment into integrated skidded or trailer-mounted systems for oil rigs, HDD projects, and TBMs (Tunnel Boring Machines).

Waste Management and Sludge Dewatering Systems: Equipment for environmental applications, such as treating industrial sludge and wastewater.

DRILLING-FLUID-SHAKERS-AND-VACUUM-DEGASSERS-ARE-SOLD-TO-EUROPE-FOR-2000HP-DRILLING-RIGS

GN Solids Control Co., Ltd. is a manufacturer and supplier of separation equipment and solids control systems for various industries. We have an international presence, including a subsidiary in the United States.

A shale shaker is the first and most critical piece of equipment in the solids control system on a drilling rig. Its primary job is to remove large, drilled solids (cuttings) from the drilling fluid (mud) before the fluid continues through the cleaning system and is recirculated downhole.

Primary Function
Think of it as a high-tech, industrial-sized sieve. It uses vibrating screens to separate solids from liquids. Efficient removal of these cuttings at this first stage is vital because:

Protects Downstream Equipment: It prevents larger particles from overloading and damaging more sensitive equipment like desanders, desilters, and centrifuges.

Maintains Drilling Fluid Properties: Drilling mud is expensive and chemically engineered. Removing solids helps maintain its desired properties (density, viscosity), which is crucial for controlling well pressure, cooling the drill bit, and stabilizing the wellbore.

Reduces Costs: Cleaner mud can be reused, significantly reducing the volume of new mud that needs to be purchased and the volume of waste that must be handled and disposed of.

Improves Drilling Efficiency: Clean mud drills faster and reduces the risk of equipment failures and drilling problems like stuck pipe.

How It Works
The process can be broken down into a few key steps:

Inflow: The “dirty” drilling fluid, laden with rock cuttings from the drill bit, flows from the wellbore onto the shaker’s screens.

Vibration: The screen deck is set into a high-speed vibrating motion, typically driven by unbalanced motors. This vibration fluidizes the mud, allowing it to pass through the screen mesh.

Separation:

Liquid & Fine Particles: The liquid drilling mud and particles smaller than the screen mesh openings pass through and are collected in a tank below, ready for the next stage of cleaning.

Solids & Cuttings: The larger drilled solids (cuttings) are conveyed along the vibrating screen surface and discharged off the end of the shaker into a separate collection bin (the “cutting box”).

Disposal: The separated dry(er) cuttings are then transported for safe disposal, often following strict environmental regulations.

The efficiency of a shale shaker is heavily dependent on the screen mesh size. Finer mesh screens remove smaller particles but have lower fluid capacity and can plug more easily.

GN-SOLIDS-CONTROLS-SHINES-AT-ADIPEC-2025-SEPARATION-TECHNOLOGY-MAKES-OIL-DEVELOPMENT-MORE-ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY

GN Solids Control Co., Ltd. is a leading Chinese-based manufacturer and service provider specializing in solids control and waste management equipment for the drilling industry.

GN’s product line covers the entire process of solids control and drilling waste management. A typical system is arranged in a sequential “mud tank” setup.

  1. Solids Control Equipment– This is their primary focus. The equipment is designed to remove drilled solids of varying sizes from the drilling fluid.

Shale Shakers: The first and most critical line of defense. They use vibrating screens to separate large drill cuttings from the drilling fluid. GN offers various models, including linear motion and balanced elliptical motion shakers.

Vacuum Degassers: Used to remove trapped gases (like methane, H2S) from the drilling fluid, which is crucial for safety and maintaining mud density.

Desanders & Desilters: Hydrocyclones that use centrifugal force to remove fine, abrasive sand and silt-sized solids. Desanders handle larger particles than desilters.

Decanter Centrifuges: High-speed rotating machines that separate the finest solids (down to a few microns) and control the viscosity and density of the drilling fluid. They are essential for barite recovery (saving expensive weighting material).

Mud Cleaners: A combination unit that typically includes a desilter bank mounted over a fine-screen shaker.

Mud Tanks & Agitation Systems: The tanks that hold the drilling fluid, equipped with agitators to keep the mud homogeneous and prevent solids from settling.

  1. Drilling Waste Management After solids are separated, GN provides equipment to handle the waste.

Vertical & Horizontal Cutting Dryers: Also known as “high-G dryers,” these further reduce the liquid content of the cuttings from the shakers, recovering more valuable drilling fluid and reducing the volume of waste for disposal.

Sludge Pumps: Transfer waste slurries and thickened sludges.

Screw Pumps & Piston Pumps: Used for moving high-viscosity fluids and slurries.

Complete Dewatering Units: Integrated systems that use chemicals (flocculants) and centrifuges to separate water from solids, producing dry solids for disposal and clean water that can often be discharged or reused.
