GN solids control design and manufacture a complete solids control system/drilling mud system for oil & gas drilling, now we need a mud cooling system in our design, to make it more user-friendly. Usually we call the mud cooling system as mud cooler.

In Oil, Gas, Geothermal Drilling ,the Mud Cooling system is used to reduce the temperature of drilling fluid returned to the surface.


In HT / HP wells the temperature of the drilling fluid must be strictly controlled to keep it’s properties within the specified parameters for that particular well. If the temperature of the drilling fluid is allowed to increase then a variety of problems can occur such as high equivalent circulating density (ECD), formation breakdown, lost circulation, packing off, stuck pipe and evaporation of the oil and water phase.

Once we get the rig layout, we can arrange for the layout of mud tank system and submit process flow drawing and layout drawing of the solids control system. Our design may take the following aspects into consideration.

1 waste solids discharge: we will try our best to simple the solids discharge operation, and save land area of solids discharge, sometimes a screw conveyor is applied to keep the mud system in compact structure and convenience solids discharge.

2 transportation convenience:

 All the handrail and walkway are foldable and can be moved together with tank body, you do not need to disassembly it.

GN solids control manufacture 2” mud gun and 3” mud gun, and we have several sets of mud guns in stock.

There are 2 type of mud guns, the common one is top tank type, sometimes we design it as bottom tank type. Top tank mud gun is controlled by staff on the tank, the difference between GN mud gun and NOV mud gun is the nozzle numbers, we make to 3 nozzle numbers, which can jet more place in the tank so the agitating effect can be better.

What is the difference between tank top and tank bottom mud gun?1 tank top mud gun

 Tank top mud gun is usually with function of agitating, together with mud agitator, they are important equipments for drilling mud tank and mud mixing tank. And how many sets of agitator you have for the mud mixing tank, usually how many mud guns you have. But it also have exception, for example, when the tank room is very small, you have no room for the agitator, and the tank is not so large, you can use a mud gun instead, it is much cheaper, needs smaller area to install and convenient to operate, also do not need to use electric power, but use pressure to work, and you do not need to buy a lot of spare parts such as gear box, bearings for the mud agitator. Anyway mud gun has a lot of advantages but it can not replace mud agitator totally, the agitating effect is not so strong as agitator. We need to use them together to benefit from both of them.

2 Tank bottom mud gun

Tank bottom mud gun also called inner tank mud gun, its function usually not agitating, but transferring and mixing line. It transfers the mud from mud mixing tank to another tank.

Where is the pressure come from ?

For high pressure mud gun, the pressure came from mud pump, for lower pressure mud gun, the pressure came from mixing pump, it can mix and transfer drilling mud to another tank.

Repairing an oil well sometimes requires a workover. It is commonly called by several names such as completion rig, workover rig, or pulling unit.

In many cases, workover implies the removal and replacement of the production tubing string after the well has been killed and a workover rig has been placed on location. Through-tubing workover operations, using coiled tubing, snubbing or slickline equipment, are routinely conducted to complete treatments or well service activities that avoid a full workover where the tubing is removed. This operation saves considerable time and expense.

 Companies that supply this type of equipment are Key Energy Services, Pool Workover Services, and Basic Well Services.

 Of all the problems that can occur during production, three stand out the most: equipment failure, wellbore problems, and saltwater disposal.


 Sanding, formation damage, paraffin accumulation, oil-water emulsions, and corrosion are common wellbore problems.

 GN workover rig solids control system is mainly used for sanding problem. The system can separate large particles sand from the drilling fluids so the drilling mud can be recycled for drilling and “kill”the well. The working principle is to clean the drilling mud by 4 phase cleaning, they are shale shaker, desander, desilter, decanter centrifuge. But usually for workover operation, sometimes you can use a shale shaker and centrifuge only, because the sand size is not so large, but it needs to separate finer particles than oil& gas drilling.

Once a client asked a very interesting question. If we add Solids control equipment system ( Shale shaker,mud cleaner & vacuum degaser ) to the centrifugal decanter separator what will be the advantages ,or we can utilize only the decanter?
Briefly answer this question: Drilling mud with drilling cutting is very complicated. So we need a system to deal with different solids.
The equipments before decanter is used to separate the solids bigger than 7μm,maybe you can only use decanter, but I should say it is a precision instrument, and it is tender. A system is needed to keep each equipment work in his own role, and prolong each one’s life.

How mud tank works, it is a very easy question, but it contains some good questions behind, so we get all these resolved. First we should know the feature of mud tanks, than the components, how it works in the solids control system, what the main fuction is, last but not least how to clean the mud tank.

Mud Tank Feature

A mud tank is an open-top container, typically made of steel, to store drilling fluid on a drilling rig. They are also called mud tankmud pits, because they used to be nothing more than pits dug out of the earth. The mud tank is devided into Square tank and Cone-shaped tank according to the shape of tank bottom. The body of the tank is made of welding the steel plate and section, using the flat cone-shape structure or the corrugated structure.

Components of Mud Tank

The mud tank surface and the passage are made of the slipping resistant steel plate and linearity netted steel plate which is produced by the professional factory, the mud tanks are made of the side steel pipe, all of the structure can be folded without barrier and pegged reliably. If you want to know why is removing solids from drilling mud so important, we can get more questions, but these questions help us to solve this question.

Firstly, we should know where is the solids from.

HA, when we drilling, the drilling mud take them out.

What is the mud’s function?

OK, so we get one more question, what the mud do in solids control system, i.e. what is the mud’s function. You can see How Drilling Mud Work In Solids Control System And Drilling Rig that I write before. I will list the main function again:

Remove cuttings from well
Suspend and release cuttings
Control formation pressures
Seal permeable formations
Maintain wellbore stability
Minimizing formation damage
Cool, lubricate, and support the bit and drilling assembly
Transmit hydraulic energy to tools and bit
Ensure adequate formation evaluation
Control corrosion (in acceptable level)
Facilitate cementing and completion

And then we can find the answer: We must get high quality drilling mud to ensure the drilling process.

COST of drilling mud and environment friendship

But why don’t we produce some new mud, here we go, I have the same question.

The answer is only one word—COST. The cost of produce new drilling mud is higher than this, it is just an economic choice.

Removing solids from drilling mud limit the cost and what’s more important, it’s good to the environment.
