<p>Common drilling mud is made of bentonite clay. A heavier drilling mud can be made by adding barite. Various chemicals are also used in different situations. The drilling mud liquid is usually water but is sometimes oil-based. Drilling mud are described by weight. Water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon. Heavy drilling mud weighs from 15 to 20 pounds per gallon. The heavier the drilling mud, the greater the pressure it exerts on the bottom of the well.</p>
<p>Fluid is circulated while the drilling proceeds. Powerful pumps move the fluid down to the pipe, through the bit and back to the surface, carrying the cuttings and other debris with it. <p><span id="more-1824"></span>Drilling mud serves several purposes. The mud removes cuttings from the bottom of the well. As the mud flows across the bit, it cleans cuttings from the teeth. The drilling mud also controls pressures in the well and prevents blowouts.</p>

<p>High solids or sand content also leads to significant abrasion in the drill tooling as the fine particles are recirculating through the mud pump and drill string. Washed out drill strings and <a title="centrifugal pump" href="http://www.gnsolidscontrol.com/sand-pump/">mud pump</a> valves/seats, along with leaking swivel packing, are caused by the recirculation of sand through the system. If the gravel pack is emplaced in the annulus through drilling fluid with a high sand content, the fines will be entrained in the gravel pack leading to increased well development costs and reduced well yields.</p>

<p>In some situations, packing material is not adequate for sealing a centrifugal pumps shaft. One common alternative method for sealing the shaft is with mechanical seals. Mechanical seals consist of two basic parts, a rotating element attached to the pump shaft and a stationary element attached to the pump casing. Each of these elements has a highly polished sealing surface. The polished faces of the rotating and stationary elements come into contact with each other to form a seal that prevents leakage along the shaft.</p>
<p>The most effective method of preventing the leakage of the <a title="Drilling Mud Equipments" href="http://www.gnsolidscontrol.com/drilling/">drilling  fluids</a> from the centrifugal pump to the external surroundings is using the mechanical seals. <h3><strong>What are Mechanical Seals in Centrifugal Pumps ?</strong></h3>
<p>In the centrifugal pumps the rotor, on which the impeller is mounted, revolves in the stationary housing of the pump and there is minor gap between the two. <p>The drill bit grinds rocks into drill cuttings, which are entrained in the mud flow and are carried out to the surface. And we separated the mud from the solids to make the mud return to the recirculating mud system.<span id="more-1030"></span></p>
<p>The liquid mud passes through the <a title="shale-shaker-screen-derrick" href="http://www.gnsolidscontrol.com/shale-shaker-screen/derrick"><strong>shale shaker screens</strong> </a>and is recirculated back to the mud tanks from which mud is withdrawn for pumping downhole. The drill cuttings remain on top of the shale shaker screens; the vibratory action of the shakers moves the cuttings down the screen and off the end of the shakers to a point where they can be collected and stored in a tank or pit for further treatment or management.</p>
<p>Then the drilling mud come to <a title="desander-desilter" href="http://www.gn-desander-desilter.com">desander and desilter</a>, and <a title="hydrocyclones-in-desander-and-desilter" href="http://oilfield.gnsolidscontrol.com/hydrocyclones-in-desander-and-desilter/">the drilling cuts are separated with the hydroclones.</a></p>

<h2>Firstly, we should know where is the solids from.</h2>
<p>HA, when we drilling, the drilling mud take them out.</p>
<h2>What is the mud’s function?</h2>
<p>OK, so we get one more question, what the mud do in solids control system, i.e. what is the mud’s function. I will list the main function again:</p>
