Recently drilling has been changed a lot, the old experience did not work, people has their own new design. “Zero discharge mud systems” are urgently required because of the environment protection. Auger box, screw conveyor can be used to collect the drilling cuttings from shale shaker, desander, desilter, mud cleaner, dewatering unit and centrifuge, then transfer them to a catch pit for later processing. In some development company where the government did not have strict regulation on environment protection, they even do not use any mud system, and let the drilling fluids discharged directly. They may face big problem in the future.

Dewatering unit is required to work together with the system, it can make further process of the fluids after processed by centrifuge after the well is finished.

The mud tank is designed similar to 40 feet standard container, it is more convenient to transport in any countries in the world. All the lifting device, dimension, skid is same with container, and we put GN solids control equipments on top of it.

GN designed a new portable mud cleaning system(trailer mounted) recently. It is user-friendly and standard mud cleaning system for 150gpm operation.

Folded for transport Dimension: LxWxH=4000x2400x3800mm, the user did not need to disassembly any equipments or parts, just fold the walkway and hand rail to the tank before transportation from one site to another. It is very convenient.

 How do 150gpm portable mud cleaning system work?

A: 50YZ40-10 Submersible slurry pump suck mud from the mud pit and feed to GNZS85-2 Shale shaker from the backside buffer box.

B:Shale Shaker first panel fixed with API 60 screen. Fluids from the slurry pump will flow to screens for solids screening. Fluids with particles only smaller then 250microns will go to tank 1# Compartment.

C:Shale Shaker second screen panel fixed with API 120 screen. SB3×2-12 Centrifugal pump will suck fluids from 1# Compartment and feed to 2x4inch desilter cones.The dirty mud will drops down to second screen panel for drying from the cones nipple,the cleaning fluids with particles under 20microns overflow from desilter pipe to the 2# compartment.

What is Sand Control?

By Oilfield glossary, sand control is one of the process of well completions. “The installation of equipment or application of techniques to prevent migration of reservoir sand into the wellbore or near-wellbore area. In weak formations, sand control may be necessary to maintain the structure of the reservoir around the wellbore. In other formation types, the migration of sand and fines into the near wellbore area may severely restrict production. Each of these conditions requires different treatments. The principal sand-control techniques include gravel packing and sand consolidation.”

What is Gravel packing?

Gravel packing involves the complete placement of selected gravel across the production interval to prevent the production of formation fines or sand. Any gap or interruption in the pack coverage will enable undesirable sand or fines to enter the producing system.

GN solids control exported several sets of drilling mud system to Amazon region, including Ecuador. We can produce the complete drilling mud separation system, including shale shaker, vacuum degasser, desander, desilter, decanter centrifuge, vertical cutting dryer, mud tank, etc.

 Ecuador produces more oil than it needs for domestic consumption and thus it is one of the country’s leading exports. Therefore, any new drilling for oil is not intended to meet local demand but is intended for export overseas, most likely to Japan and the United States.

Drilling mud is used to control subsurface pressures, lubricate the drill bit, stabilize the well bore, and carry the cuttings to the surface, among other functions. Mud is pumped from the surface through the hollow drill string, exits through nozzles in the drill bit, and returns to the surface through the annular space between the drill string and the walls of the hole.

As the drill bit grinds rocks into drill cuttings, these cuttings become entrained in the mud flow and are carried to the surface. In order to return the mud to the recirculating mud system and to make the solids easier to handle, the solids must be separated from the mud. The first step in separating the cuttings from the mud involves circulating the mixture of mud and cuttings over shale shakers.

The liquid mud passes through the screens and is recirculated back to the mud tanks from which mud is withdrawn for pumping downhole.

This week GN shipped several sets of stainless steel mud agitators to Algeria. Normally our agitator material is carbon steel, but sometimes we can make customized equipments, such as customized shaft length, impeller diameter, impeller thickness, material, etc.

A mud agitator is used in surface mud systems to suspend solids and maintain homogeneous mixture throughout the system. A mechanical agitator is driven by an explosion-proof motor, coupled to a gear box that drives the impeller shaft. The impellers (turbines) transform mechanical power into fluid circulation or agitation. The objective is to obtain a uniform suspension of all solids.

Mud agitator can be divided into horizontal mounted agitator and vertical mounted agitator according to mounting method.

All Derrick agitators feature a “C” face motor coupled to a rugged oilfield gearbox, which

eliminates misalignment and troublesome couplings. This configuration promotes longer motor and gearbox bearing life. Derrick uses a Helical-Bevel gear unit to turn the impeller.

This highly efficient gearbox offers a 95% power transfer, which is approximately 30% more than a worm drive gearbox. Helical-Bevel gearboxes are preferred over worm gear arrangements because of their power efficiency, reliability, and lower operating temperatures.

 Venezuela’s proven oil reserves are among the top ten in the world. Today, Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporting country in the world with the second-largest reserves of heavy crude oil (after Canada).

 There is big demand of oilfield drilling mud system/solids control system in Venezuela. Before they mainly purchased the drilling mud system from USA . But now more and more clients realize that they can purchase rig packages from China, although the delivery time and transportation will be longer and complicated, they can save a considerable drilling cost.

A complete drilling fluids circulation system including shale shaker, mud cleaner( or separate desander, desilter), screw conveyer , Cutting dryer, recycling mud tank, decanter centrifuge(with feeding pump), drilling mud reserve tank/storage tank, etc.

After processed by cutting dryer, the large drilling cuttings have been separated out, the drilling fluids flows to recycling tank or to decanter centrifuge through screw pump. Since decanter centrifuge has higher separation factor than cutting dryer, it can separate fine particles from the drilling fluids and recycling barite to keep the drilling fluids balance.

What is TBM?

A tunnel boring machine (TBM) also known as a “mole”, is a machine used to excavate tunnels with a circular cross section through a variety of soil and rock strata. They can bore through hard rock, sand, and almost anything in between. Tunnel diameters can range from a metre (done with micro-TBMs) to almost 16 metres to date. Tunnels of less than a metre or so in diameter are typically done using trenchless construction methods or horizontal directional drilling rather than TBMs.

Function of TBM

Tunnel boring machines are used as an alternative to drilling and blasting (D&B) methods in rock and conventional ‘hand mining’ in soil. TBMs have the advantages of limiting the disturbance to the surrounding ground and producing a smooth tunnel wall. This significantly reduces the cost of lining the tunnel, and makes them suitable to use in heavily urbanized areas. The major disadvantage is the upfront cost. TBMs are expensive to construct, and can be difficult to transport. However, as modern tunnels become longer, the cost of tunnel boring machines versus drill and blast is actually less—this is because tunnelling with TBMs is much more efficient and results in a shorter project.

GN400 slurry separation system is composed of the following items:

1 GNZS83-3 shale shaker 2sets , with 2.7m3 pyramid screen area and max 7.0G vibrating strength

The shaker screen is not same as common oil drilling shaker screen, it is a kind of slit type shaker screen, material is stainless steel wire. It can process large solids such as rocks, the function is same as scalper. But if the solids in the mud is not so large, you can change a small mesh screen so that the treatment effect could be better, so it is much flexible than scalper.  

2 GNZJ83-3 desander 1set, use 3 pcs 12” PU hydrocyclones with underflow shaker GNZS83-3

3 GNZJ83-3 desilter 1 set, use 18pcs 5” PU hydrocyclones with underflow shaker GNZS83-3

 5”  Hydrocyclones can process larger capacity than conventional 4” cone, and it is not easy to jam the inlet of desilter. The GNZJ83-3 desilter is designed of round arrangement, the round arrangement is with compact structure and better performance than horizontal line.

In a solids control system, desilting is after desanding work, and depends on the drilling mud character,  the desanding or desilting unit is not always need. GN Solids Control always can give our clients a appropriate solution.

Desilting cones is the main and core part of the desilter. The dimension of the hydrocyclones is 4″.  ZQJ 100s and ZQJ 100 is the usual model of GN, ZQJ100s means the desilting equipments with a small shale shaker.
